Behind the scenes: a quiet garden apartment in Park Slope

No walls moved, no new floors, and the apartment still feels completely different. How plaster, linen and a backyard changed a brownstone garden floor.

This client wanted change without a renovation. She works from home, so we had one rule: nothing that would keep her out of the apartment for more than a week.

Change the light, not the walls

The living room gets good light in the morning and very little after lunch. Warm gray limewash plaster softens the walls without darkening them, and sheer linen curtains spread the daylight instead of blocking it.

A backyard that counts as a room

A small deck, an outdoor sectional and flower boxes along the fence turned an unused yard into the place she has dinner from spring to fall. It added more living space than any interior change could have.
